The road turned out to be the expected rough washboard track with the odd semi-hairy ascent and descent but generally was ok to drive with my non-off-road van. It nevertheless demanded my full concentration in the moonlit twilight to stay on track and avoid too much rattling of the van. It was a strenuous drive, and I was very relieved when I finally reached the border to the nature reserve and found a space to park my van besides the river. For a moment I was considering the consequences of a possible flash flood to my parking lot, but I was too tired anyway and went to sleep.
The next morning, I woke up to an overcast sky and light rain and got to see the surrounding landscape for the first time. It was a strange landscape, barren and quite a bit intimidating, yet fascinating. I had a quick coffee and then started the van to continue my drive, not knowing what would await me and if I even would make it to the campground in the centre of the vast Landmannalaugar, according to what I had read and heard a geothermal wonderland and a must-go area in the Highlands.
