The Golden Circle - Gullni Hringurinn in Icelandic - is an easily drivable route helping short time visitors to see some of the major attractions of Iceland in a day. It starts in Reykjavik, goes to Þingvellir, continues to the famous Geysir and then to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall. That basic route of about 300 kilometres can be extended with other natural highlights.
Also, these 300 kilometres is quite some drive, we decided to do it within a day so the boys could at least claim of having been at all these must-go places. We started with the majestic Gullfoss waterfall, a truly spectacular site, albeit almost always heavily crowded. Next stop was the Geysir, which had ceased to blow a couple of decades ago but the neighbouring Strokkur geyser has stepped in and erupts every 10 minutes.
Needless to say, we weren´t alone, but it wasn´t too bad and the geyser gave all it had. Next on the list was Þingvellir, the plain bordering the rift created by the drift of the American and Eurasian tectonic plates which are drifting into different directions. That rift runs through the whole island and separates it into a European part and an American part, geologically speaking.
