So, I cruised back west along the mostly empty coast road until I reached the Skagafjörður again and was greeted with a wonderful view on the bird island. When I passed that outer reef a few ripples were trying to tease me back into surfing mode, but I ignored them.

South of Hofsós I pulled off the main road to have a look at one of the oldest buildings of Iceland. Grafarkirkja is a tiny chapel build in the 17th century the traditional way with peat walls and a grass roof. It is really small but picturesque and sits within a great landscape. Well worth the little detour.

The fine weather and great panorama seduced me to another detour via a bumpy road heading to the mountains. After a while I reached Hólar, a small town with barely 100 inhabitants but of greater historic importance as it had become Iceland’s second bishop´s see in 1106 and lasted almost 700 years. Nowadays it hosts a technical college for horse and fish breeding and tourism. The church built in the 18th century is quite nice but the real attraction of this town is based – like so often on this island – on the amazing landscape it sits in.
