On this detour of about 30 kilometres I met maybe two or three other cars and passed just a handful of houses. The gravel road was in good condition despite parts of it running through steep mountain flanks with very unstable soil. There were a lot of potholes but all together the road was good enough to travel at a reasonable speed of about 80 kilometres per hour as long as it got not too curvy.

Not that I was in a hurry but in between stops it was good to be able to cover some distance without getting rattled too much. Back at the Ring Road – not only the main road circling the island but also often the only road accessible without off-road vehicles – the traffic stayed very light. It was already late and often it took more then ten minutes before I met another car.

The ring road had a firm surface built with some rough form of asphalt now on most parts but stayed curvy and just wide enough for two cars to pass each other, so driving needed some concentration. But the terrific scenery of mountains and fjords kept distracting me. I compromised by driving in a very cruisy mode while soaking in the fantastic landscape and keeping a special eye on the coast in search of some potential surf breaks.
