With sunset a few last sets rolled in and provided some final bliss before the ocean went flat with the last light of the day. That guy on the SUP made a last attempt to make one of the shorebreak barrels in the dark and a few surfers neglected the beginning of the night too but in the end, everybody had to accept that it was over. So had I. I went back to the van for the journey back home. It would be a long drive and it would be hard ´cause it got in the wrong direction. I already had delayed my return to work for a day to catch this swell. No I had a few night hours and one more day to cover the about 1.500 kilometers from here to Hamburg.
The plan was to drive a few hundred kilometers and reduce the driving distance for the following day to under 1.000 kilometers. Leaving the island, I lost two hours in the traffic jam from Rivedoux to the toll bridge. I than made it near Orleans before I had to get to sleep. The next morning I got up early and was greeted with thick fog. As I did not really feel like driving I left the motorway soon and decided to make a short detour to visit one of the Loire castles, the fabulous Chambord palace.
It was well worth the detour but I couldn´t stay long before I finally had to get back on the motorway and drive north.
