Avalanches stood up to its name. The swell hit the reef with even more power here and created a massive, powerful, fast and sometimes tubey left. The crew in the lineup here was significantly smaller than at the other breaks.

I was surprised how many guys were out. I mean, it was sunny and warm and there was almost no wind and conditions were perfect but I didnīt expect that many people having big wave guns in their quiver and knowing how to ride them (and how to deal with XL-sized waves).

I only had taken a small backpack for my bicycle exploration ride and therefore only had a small lens plus my old analog camera and the old mid-sized tele lens which hindered me to get closer shots of the action outside. And the longer lens only worked with the analog camera which was loaded with a black and white film whose 36 frames were exposed pretty soon. And I didnīt have a second roll. (click here for a selection of the B&W shots)

But the scenery was so breathtaking and I didnīt know how long this would last plus you could sit in a bar with perfect view on all of the peaks so I didnīt dare to cycle back to get my larger lens for a long time.

I marveled on the show for more than two hours until the early afternoon and the swell showed no signs of backing off. So I finally decided to cycle back to the van to get the long lens.
