After a while I realized that the eddy had caught me. I couldn´t really figure out which way was sideways to the current so I kept paddling in direction to the beach and hoped that a set would arrive and awaken the left in front of the eddy. But the ocean kept flat here for a long while until finally something big enough to break arrived. I took off on a closeout but got far enough to get out of the eddy´s grip.

All this was never really serious or in any way threatening, but the constant paddle against the current wasn´t any good for my back. With the first steps on the beach I realized that I would have to pay for this session again. I went back to the van and had another breakfast. Then I drove to Santona again to buy some food and have a coffee in a bar at the town center. On the walk in I passed that bar from yesterday again and met the old men again, who were once again or still playing cards.

In the late afternoon I went back to the beach for a last check before I had to leave the area. The wind was a light onshore and the waves were smaller but it looked like fun longboard waves. My body said no.

So I hit the road again and drove east on the motorway, passing Bilbao´s impressive and a bit confusing highways at dusk. Driving didn´t really please my sore back but I did not have to go too far. Another solid swell was forecasted together with light south-easterly winds. I planned to have a look at this at the French Basque coast the other day.
