I parked the van in the little village up the hill on the way to Laga and walked a few meters back. When the island got visible I spotted a jet sky driving back to the river mouth. I was just starting to curse this day when I realized that there was another ski out and it was dragging a surfer. A solid set appeared at the western tip of the island and the surfer got whipped into a beast. He carved through the first section, managed the transition to the second section and almost got tubed here before he ended the ride at the eastern tip of the island. He passed the whole length of the island and spent 40 exciting seconds on that wave. I almost could hear his cries of joy over here at the mainland (click here for the full 40 seconds sequence).

The sun came out and the two out there had a few more spectacular rides before they decided to head back into the safe harbour. I was happy having witnessed this half hour of magic, decided that it was a good day and drove the short distance to Laida and had a café con leche and a few pinchos in the harbour bar. The estuary and the mess that used to be Europe´s best left was lit by beautiful evening light. Having regained some energy I decided to hit the road again and drive to Cantabria, where I hopped to get to surf myself again the following day. The labyrinth of motorways, tunnels and bridges that passes Bilbao and the adjacent harbour and industry sites was impressive as always but strenuous to drive in the dark and I was quite a bit relieved when I finally reached Laredo.
