I started the van and drove, at the beginning without having made a clear decision. When I came to the crossroad where I had to make the decision, I gave up the Menakoz option and continued on the road to Bermeo.

I knew I would reach the river mouth at high tide, which definitely is not the best time for the left. But it had worked with higher tides pretty good the last time I had been here (follow this link for the proof >>>), so I went. It was a slow drive over curvy roads and on the ascent to the Alto de Sollube the public bus slowed things down even more. On the summit I had a glimpse on Izaro Island and spotted some massive rights breaking in front of it. But I missed the opportunity to stop for a closer look and made the once again VERY curvy descent to Bermeo with a bit of excitement. When I finally reached Mundaka I pulled over to the parking strip at the main street right at the town boundary.

The left wasn´t visible from here so I hurried to get into town. I passed through the harbour and already could see that it wasn´t any good. The closer look from the harbour wall revealed only one guy out and this had a reason. The waves were pathetic despite the solid swell. The tide was definitely too high but besides this there must have been something else absolutely killing the magic of this wave. Maybe the removed sand for the renovation of the eroded Laida beach. Maybe the full moon and the coefficient being too high. Maybe all together. I started to call it a day when I spotted something that looked like a jet sky and a surfer behind way out at the right in front of the island. On a second look I was pretty sure that there was somebody tow surfing these massive rights. I headed back to the van and started it for the half hour drive around the Urubai estuary to get a closer look.
