At night on the campground I got reminded about where I had spent the day when I switched the heating on got another intense dose of the fish factory odour blown into my nose. But my mind was still cheered up by the vision of flags pointing west in the shine of the lamps at the entrance of the campground. The wind had finally turned east and this meant hope for a bit juicier waves at the west coast the following day.
Thursday, I got up before dawn – which isn´t that difficult at this time of the year as the sun rises at around eight – checked the (it was still right) and drove to the only west-facing reef break in the area. It was grey and drizzly but relatively mild tempered. Despite the light offshore I could here waves breaking before I reached the top of the dunes. But the view from up there cooled down my excitement.
Obviously, the north swell had already vanished or was overlapped by a short period west-southwest swell. Whatever the reason, the waves on the reef weren´t braking properly. The sandbars in front of the block houses had some waves but these were not very consistent. When there is too much south in the swell direction other places work better and so I started the van again and headed south.
