It took a few years, but eventually, in winter 2016, it was on. At the end of 2015, Sal appeared on our radar screens while searching for windsurfing destinations for the European wintertime. The spot guides we found on the Internet promised perfect flat water / freeride conditions at the sandy beach of Santa Maria, besides the well-known wave sailing spots.

This argument was enough to convince my girlfriend Valerie, travel buddy Chris and our friends Max and Elena to book a trip to Sal, which promised to be a perfect combination of suitable conditions for all of us. During the next days, we were already daydreaming about perfectly shaped waves, empty beaches, and beautiful freestyle conditions – just what we had experienced before already on the other Cabo Verde islands, like Boavista and Sao Vicente.

But, euphoria was slowed down a little, as we started to search for flights and accommodation. We quickly realized that, in February, Santa Maria is a busy place. It was not easy at all to find any suitable apartment close to the beach. But it became even more tricky to book our plane tickets, especially traveling with own gear. Currently, Tuifly and TAP (via Lissabon) are the best options to fly to Sal from Germany. If you want to bring your own gear, you should definitely favor flying with Tuifly, but in our case, all space for windsurfing gear was booked on more or less every single flight from any German airport.
