The following days exceeded our expectations. Every day we had more wind and more waves, peaking in a 3 meter waves and 3.6 sails – for the skinny boys - session. El Medano really delivered and the Canaries once again proved that they are almost always worth a visit during summer. Almost always, because as we now know, the World Cup on Gran Canaria a few days after our departure was plagued with Calima weather and therefor had to be cancelled because there was no wind at all. This can happen even in summer, but luckily not too often…
What immediately springs into your eyes when you go windsurfing in the El Médano bay is the “Godzilla” stickers on the sails of the locals. At first we didn´t have any clue what this should be – a surf shop, a fashion brand, someone with too much money, supporting the locals? Not at all. Godzilla is the name, that the Canarios gave to a fat rock, situated right in the El Médano bay close to the beach. The rock is just covered with water at high tide and sticks out of the ocean surface at low tide. The real Godzilla already had the habit to destroy everything in numerous Holywood films and behaves similar in the Cabezo bay. The rule is: everybody has already been on top of Godzilla.
The inattentive ones or the ones who haven´t seen the rock at low tide is very likely to make closer acquaintance with it sooner or later during his windsurf trip – something that usually has consequences for fins or boards. And if you manage to avoid Godzilla you will very likely get familiar with walking on the reef at the leeward side of the best peak at the bunker. Nothing extremely dangerous, but a harsh test for your gear and your feet. But all in all El Médano is pretty easy, especially when you stay a bit more at luv, ride the waves in the middle of the bay and don´t get too close to the reef at the bunker. Then you almost exclusively fins sand bottom and risk very little while still having a lot of fun.
