Friday

This was supposed to be the day before the big swell. First offshoots were forecasted to reach the island in the late afternoon with about 5 ft @ 16 seconds. The wind was forecasted to blow with medium strength from the northwest.

When I woke up in the morning it was pretty obvious, that I had brought a bug. Nose running, dizzy head, general weak feeling. I nevertheless loaded the van with windsurf and surf stuff. Tried to start the van. But couldn´t turn the key for the ignition. Tried it a few times until Kussi came over, wondering what I was doing in THAT van. It was a white VW T3 van. But it wasn´t mine. Mine was standing 10 meters away at the other side of the court. Good start into the day.

I drove to the east coast and checked the Corralejo spots first. It was low tide and messy. Drove to Flag Beach. Some waves were making it around the corner and the wind was light and side-offshore. The part of the beach with the best combination of waves and wind – nothing spectacular but at least surfable – was occupied by a few surf schools. I went for another check further south. There it was flat. Drove back to Flag Beach and watched for a while. Found out that there was wave breaking at the northern part of the occupied peak and decided to have a go.

I took the longboard, paddled out and almost immediately had a nice little left.
