Brignogan Plages

This a particularly beautiful borough at the generally stunning north coast of Finistère. The area is blessed with a stunning mix of bays, sandy beaches and stunning rock formations and the for the area typical architecture of Breton stone houses and century old churches. Needless to say, that the remnants of the mysterious Neolithic culture are spread throughout the countryside here too.

It takes a half-an-hour detour from the expressway through beautiful a countryside and some nice towns to get to the area. The coast to The Channel here is a succession of small beaches and rocky headlands. These headlands are not monolithic though but consist of myriads of rocks from car-size to house-size, all polished into round and often fantastic forms by the relentless winds.

At Keravezan a little bay cuts deeper into the coast, framed by tow particularly beautiful headlands. During lower tides you can walk on very fine sand through the bay and the almost artistic rock formations with little ponds in between. Along the sandy parts of the bay there are numerous little houses – often to rent for holidays – and the inevitable bar plus during tourist season a couple of restaurants and cafes.

Port du Pontusval within the bay consists mainly of a boat ramp but hosts a Centre Nautique where you can rent small sail boats, SUPS and windsurfing equipment. During high tide the bay offers beautiful flat-water sailing / windsurfing / kitesurfing conditions within a stunning scenery. Just be careful – like everywhere on the channel coast – with currents due to the immense tidal hub at this coast.

One of the major attractions of the area is the Menhir de Men Marz, an ensemble of large menhirs with the last one standing baptised with a cross on top of it in an urgent attempt of the catholic church in the 16th century to conquer the ancient gods.
