Almaciga:

The north coast of Tenerife is still avery remote area. The beautifull Anaga mountain range still makes access a bit difficult and has blocked off the tourist hordes. To get there You´ll have to drive about one hour through the mountains on a winding and narrow road. It helps to have good nerves, some driving experience, good braks and a solid stomach. But the fantastic scenery and the year round consistant waves make the trip worth. There is no accomodation to rent at the coastal settlements what means, that surfing there is a day trip thing and consumes a lot of driving time. But even when the waves do not cooperate, the mountains and it´s ancient laurisilva woods make the trip worth. Do not expect sunny weather though, as the mountains catch the clowds that come with the trade winds. This makes this area very fertile but also very wet.

surfing: the fairly sheltered bay has a mixture of rock, stone and sand bottom and offers severall breaks. On the left near the rocks breaks a short left and the east side has a longer rippable right. With bigger waves another break appears further outside that has lefts and rights. Due to its northern orientation there is almost always waves here. The place holds waves up to 3m (face) which means that in winter the spot can get out of controll fairly often with huge winter swells. Summertime gets plagued by the ever blowing northeast trades but due to the cliffs the place has some protection.

Usually there is no crowds here due to the remoteness of the place. Nevertheless there are some locals surfing the place. Give them respect and be friedly.

windsurfing & kiteboarding: not recommended as the surrounding cliffs are to high and the bay is pretty small.

other activities: the mountains are perfect for hiking and mountainbiking.
