That hot spot seems to drift west-southwest as the oldest islands are Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the northeast of the archipelago. Both are pretty worn down by time and erosion and resemble a lot the Sahara desert on the nearby African mainland. Lanzarote has a little bit more green and active volcanism (again) with the lava boiling not too far away from the surface in the Timanfaya region.

Another 100 km respectively 160 km west of Fuerteventura are located the two main islands of the archipelago, Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Both islands are very mountainous, both are dubbed “mini continents” due to their large variety of vegetation and climate (with Tenerife earning this name a bit more due to the snow-capped Pico de Teide), both are densely populated at the coastal areas and have a fierce competition about which islandīs capital is the cultural capital of the archipelago.

Again a bit further west you find the youngest islands, La Gomera, La Palma and Hierro, plus an underwater volcano that currently struggles to become an island.

Every island has itīs qualities and beauty, it is impossible to say which one is the one most worth visiting. Go find out yourself and donīt stick to just one of them. Itīs worth the – multiple – visit!
