Santiago:

Slavery dominated the beginning of human settlement on this island. Being closest to continental Africa, Santiago was the first island in the chain that saw permanent settlements of human beiings. The portugese discovered it and quickly took advantage of its strategicaly perfect position between Europe, Africa and South America.
