The wind had dropped and even seemed to have turned a notch to the west. I left Whitby and drove on the road along the large beach to the cliffs at the northern end of the bay. The wind was a light north-north-west and the high cliffs might give some protection. The parking at the end of the beach was not accessible for my van due to height restriction bars, but on the drive, I had seen enough. I turned the van and parked along the main road in the small town. Without further hesitation, I slid into my rubber clothing, grabbed the longboard and hastily walked back to the cliff.

The sun was shining, the cliff blocked the wind and nice shoulder-high lefts were peeling from the point and way into the bay. I had expected very little for this windy and rainy day and now there were clean point break waves on offer. The paddle out was pretty long but easy. 4 other surfers were out. I decided to take some time to watch first to find out how the break works.

But it turned out that I didn´t have too much time as the tide was already pretty high and still rising and soon dark clouds appeared and the wind turned back to northeast and soon was messing the waves. It was a short session and when I returned to the beach “riding” the mess that was left it started to rain again. The wind picked up in force and brought heavy rain squalls. But it also blew away the clouds quickly and the sun returned. But the wind stayed cross-onshore and strong and the tide was too high now.
