I had enough time to check the surf and quickly drove back to the hostel where I slipped into my wetsuit, grabbed the longboard and walked over the hill to North Bay again. A 1.5 metres swell was on offer and the wind was still side-offshore. There were only two other guys out and I joined them for a nice session until the wind turned north as predicted. I walked back to the hostel and had a shower and a coffee.

I walked around town a bit before I went in search for more surf. It was still dull and rainy and I did not have too much hope. The swell was small now and I doubted that it would have enough energy to wrap around any headlands and make it into wind-sheltered bays.

North Bay was flat so I drove south to Cayton Bay. There the beachies were windblown and not worth getting into the still wet and cool wetsuit. Up at the headland some small lines wrapped around the point. They looked barely surf-able but barely means that there might be a chance. It was mid-tide – usually not the best circumstances for the point – and nobody was out.

I decided to give it a try. The walk down the slippery mud path to the bay was treacherous but I survived it. Down at the beach I walked up to the cliff and paddled out through shallow but absolutely calm water. Out at the reef it turned out that set-waves were hip to chest-high, much better than it looked form up the cliffs.
