That queue moved very slowly and the reason were intense security controls. Soldiers with machine guns were closely checking every car and once I reached them, they checked my van too. And there is quite a bit to check inside a mobile-home kind of van like mine. But in the end, they let me pass and enter the ferry.

When I left the ferry in Dover and passed the border controls there I had to pull over and drive into a hangar for another closer check. Again, my van was scrutinized. Only this time it was just a customs officer and he didn´t carry a machine gun. Next to me they carried loads of cigarette boxes out of another van that obviously was completely loaded with smuggle ware. The customs officer searched very accurately for anything similar in my van but in vain. When I finally left the customs controls I asked myself how much more control over their boarders the Brits actually needed.

Now I was northbound and a bit in a hurry and glad that I managed to pass London and der Dartford tunnel without any further delay. Near Cambridge the sun came out and it got pretty warm with temperature in the upper teens.

The drive was easy but boring and so I listened to BBC radio a lot and stumbled onto a program featuring a discussion of candidates from Cornwall for the upcoming general election.
