EP03-Corse-02h

The ferry ride was calm in any means. There were very few other passengers on board, and it was windless and sunny and the sea had barely a ripple. We passed the island of Elba in beautiful late afternoon light and approached Bastia just after sunset.

I had searched for a legal place to spend the night in the van with my mobile phone and headed north to the – according to my oh so smart telephone - closest campground. Following the directions of my GPS I drove along the narrow coast road for a while and then was directed to turn left. The problem with this advice was, that the road supposed to lead to the campground was a very narrow one, barely wide enough for a normal car. As there was no sign of a campground either I decided not to trust the internet anymore and do my search the old way.

This meant I had a loo on a map – made of paper – and picked the lagoon south of town and the beaches alongside as my new target. The lagoon was one of the very few even areas on the island and was divided from the sea by a narrow stretch of land.

So, I drove back to Bastia, passed the town and continued south on the highway until I found the first turn-off leading to tha beaches. And so I stumbled on a campground that was still open and turned out to be a nice place bordering right at the beach. As it was almost empty, I found a spot close to beach and had a relaxed and quiet first night on the island.
