To get there you have the option of taking a gravel road in fairly good condition on the west side of the river or take the dirt track on the east side, which is in less good condition but offers you access to the more spectacular sites along the river. It was no question which road I would take.

At the beginning of the dirt track I stopped and had a look at the information boards set up there. A sign warned about the difficult road but when a normal car was coming down the track I was convinced that it couldn´t be that bad. I started the van and headed south into a landscape that more and more reminded me of the Timanfaya region on Lanzarote.

Black lava pebbles were the dominating background to some bright green spots and the odd reddish crater. Once in a while the lava had formed bizarre sculptures and all together this was a very otherworldly landscape. Very fascinating indeed. The track was ok to drive and the slow pace required to not rattle my van too much allowed some nice sightseeing while driving.

After a while I reached a sign leading to the first waterfall, the Hafragilsfoss. The dirt track I had to follow was just wide enough for one car and a bit windy, with a sketchy last section passing a steep and muddy hill but my trusty old van managed this passage without any problems. Just on the way back – it was a dead-end road – going back up the hill would become a little bit thrilling.
