Chances are high that the first settlers on the island didn´t know about that geological detail, but the area nevertheless became of great importance for them and from the very beginning hosted the annual Žing, a gathering of the Viking tribes of the island where disputes were settled, and rules agreed. This became one of the world’s oldest parliaments.

Aside of the historic importance, the area is very beautiful with large lakes bordering the plain and the rift, cutting through the lava rock with a very regular and endless trench. It was late in the afternoon already and we didn´t have the time to explore more than a fraction of the area and just walked along the rift for a while.

Next stop was Reykjavik, where we made a quick tour through town and then drove to Grótta at the outermost tip of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula. Here the sun finally reappeared and gifted us a beautiful sunset, but this must have appeared a cynical good by to my friends, who had to fly back this night after four overwhelmingly clouded days. We had some noodles in the van as good by dinner before we drove to the airport where I dropped the boys off. Then I headed over to Grindavik to spend the night. The swell forecast for the following day was looking very good.
