Because of the natural harbour deep in the fjord Seyðisfjörður is the biggest town at the east coast of Iceland. Still, the size of the ferry and the town with its biggest buildings not higher than three stories didn´t fit together. I knew that Iceland is very scarcely populated, and I knew that settlements with more than hundred people were considered as bigger towns.

The ascend through the fjord with the barren mountains without any traces of human existence and the view from the upper deck of the ferry on the scattered buildings – many of them wooden – of the largest town at Iceland’s east coast gave a first visual impression of what was lying ahead of me: lot´s of landscape with very few humans.
 

I was happy and quite excited when I finally could leave the ferry. When I reached the customs, I expected to get intensively checked as my van had plenty of space and hidden corners to store food or alcohol or cigarettes which were all restricted to a limited amount that can be imported. But the customs officers just gave me a warm welcome and let me pass without inspection.
