This was nothing that really made me eager to paddle out. So, I went to town for breakfast with the faint hope that the swell would be a bit smaller later. But when I returned nothing had changed besides a surf school that had sent out their pupils for some raging whitewater rides.

I was in a weird dilemma. There was plenty of swell and perfect wind and weather conditions and I couldn´t go out. And the forecast for the next day was even bigger. I pondered driving to Capbreton to shoot photos but I was too eager to surf myself. So, I did a quick calculation of driving distances and made a decision, that I never thought I would make deliberately:

I hit the road again with destination Ile de Ré. What had plagued me during numerous flat summer days now seemed to be the perfect solution: protection from the open Atlantic, refuge from swells.

As it was already noon I had to hurry. Any bigger traffic jam could delay me enough to reach the northern end of the island too late. But I was lucky. I passed Bordeaux without traffic jams and the roads around La Rochelle were free too.
