Yes, the right at the harbor wall was breaking. And there were some guys out surfing it. I drove around the bay and entered the town from the north. I managed to find a way through the residential streets to a parking lot on top off the cliffs.
From there it was just a short walk along the coast to the Ste. Barbe Chapel and the park below it. From one of the cliffs I had a first close look on the right and what I saw looked good.
The right at the harbor wall had come alive and it was breaking for a very long distance. Despite the steep take off it was running soft, perfectly fitting the longboarder’s and especially the SUP-surfer´s needs. On a floaty enough board you could cruise from the reef through the whole bay to the town beach.
A couple of guys were out and having a very nice morning session. It is a rare occasion that this wave breaks and I wonder how good it must have been before they built this large harbor wall and created the sheltered bay in front of Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This harbor town is already very beautiful. What a perfect place has it been before the swells got blocked out…..
For a moment I pondered paddling out but then remembered the past night and my wrecked back. I watched for a while and then continued driving north to the right-hand point break that I had visited a few days before.
