The sun was shining, the water was warm enough to sail barefoot and the wind was strong. Already strong enough for a 4.0 sail so I had quite a bit of work keeping that 4.5 sail under control. It was o.k. for sailing but barely manageable when riding a wave. After a while even just going straight was a constant struggle so I went back to the beach. Naturally I cut my feet on the way out. I decided to have a break and go see what the “Supremesurf Big Day” contest was doing.

This is a standby contest that only kicks off with storm force winds and is held at the most suited location at the German Baltic Sea coast. Usually it happens in autumn and winter. The last contest was held about two years ago. It says a lot about this summer storm that it ignited the contest. Germany´s best wave-sailors even left Gran Canaria where the next PWA World Cup was scheduled to start the following weekend to attend this Baltic Sea event.

So there was quite some action to expect. Down at the contest site the wind was blowing hard and the waves were a bit mightier but still not epic. But the combination of sufficient ramps and strong winds already allowed the competitors some impressive jumps.

Once the 35 knot winds blew for a while some rip-able waves rolled in and the riders could throw in some solid slashing. From round 3 on the elite riders entered the competition and the improving conditions were used for an exciting performance of wave-sailing. To my relieve the “pros” were using sails in the 4.0 and smaller range and I didn´t feel too ashamed anymore having given up with my 4.5 sail earlier on.
