nordic spring sessions p2

The following weeks had plenty of easterly winds, which meant that the baltic sea was the place to go.

A birthday party of some nonsurfing / windsurfing / kiteboarding friends that I was not allowed to miss in order to avoid serious early season family trouble brought me to a place east of Lübeck. Luckily the place was not far away from the baltic sea so I could sneak away for a quick windsurfing session at a nice bay called Wohlenberger Wiek. The wind was onshore but the sun was sailing and I could train those windsurfing reflexes again, that got lost during winter. The whole area between Lübeck and the island of Rügen is more or less uncharted area concerning windsurfing, kiteboarding or even surfing. I´ll check these places more often now.

The following weekend didn´t stand up to the more optimistic promises and left me frustrated. Sure enough, monday it was blowing and the sun was shining. I couldn´t stand this too long and decided that work wasn´t good for me today. The van was ready and I hit the road at noon.

The strong east winds led me to a place at the baltic sea that I hadn´t sailed for a while. It´s still forbidden to drive that track past the light house but at the parking I found out that a couple of fellow windsurfers also had ignored the signs to cure their wotk sickness.

Wind was blowing with a good force 6 and pushed some nice little waves over the rocky reef. Wind direction was perfect northeast and allowed some good jumps and the odd frontside wave slash.

The session was nice and the some guys were ripping but I had to leave in the late afternoon for an appointment with some surfing friends that ever since have tried in vain to make me surf the seas of this area. We met at the “Kurpark” in Timmendorf and stepped into our wetsuits right in front of a fancy hotel. There was only about one hour of daylight left so we hurried to reach the pier.

And yes, there were surfable waves coming in here. They had head high faces - which doesn´t mean what You might think as they have very little power - and a crew of longboarders and one brave shortboarder were allready making the best out of the mushy onshore conditions. It was a “big day” for baltic sea standarts and I finaly jumped from the pier to surf here. Normaly You jump from the platform in the middle of the pier and land behind the lineup. This time You landed right in the impact zone which meant that You had to time Your jump good. Not that the whitewater would do You any harm but it could bother You. Outside it was hard to find the right position as the waves jacked up very quick and it was a constant wobbling caused by the chaotic windblown waves.

It was a good experience finaly having surfed this part of the baltic sea (there are better ones further east) and having done that on a big day but I´d still rather go windsurfing with this conditions.

But spring wasn´t over yet and there were more things to come
