I had two options now. One was a longer drive north to the bays – and mostly beach breaks – starting at the Golfe de Sagone and stretching until Cargese. The other option was the for me unknown territory of the southern parts of the gulf of Ajaccio. I opted for the latter, calculating that the further south I got the more of the north swell should reach the coast.

I made it through Ajaccio without too many traffic jams and soon reached the large sandy beach stretching for over a kilometre in front of the airport. It was flat here, so I drove inland around the airport and back to the coast. At Porticcio I had the impression that there was more swell reaching the shores and I stopped at the little Isolella peninsula for a closer check. I had to park the van at a protected beach at the base of the peninsula and walk the narrow road along numerous holiday houses often hindering beach access. The bay on the northern side of the peninsula had some outer reefs that created the odd breaking, albeit not surf-able wave.

Following the coast around the peninsula soon turned out to be impossible as too many private grounds blocked the way. I ended up circling the peninsula along a path a little bit uphill which was once again framed by thick macchia too high to have more then the odd glimpse on the coast of the peninsula. But from up the hill I could spot swell lines and breaking waves further south.
