We have made it a tradition to spend the turn of the year at the Cote d´ Azur and together with my daughter I was heading south via Italy after having visited family in Munich. Of course, I had checked forecasts for the western Mediterranen Sea as we would drive along the Ligurian coast. And the forecast for 23rd December made me drive until very late as I was hell bent to be at the coast at first light.
We spent the night at a service area along the motorway just behind La Spezia and left it after a very short night about an hour before dawn. It had just begun to dawn when we reached the promenade at the beach in Levanto where I parked the van and went to check the waves while my daughter laid down in the back of the van for some more sleep.
I knew that I had very little time as we were due to pick up my wife at Nice in the afternoon and with the first view on the sea knew that I wouldn´t get to surf myself today. The swell was big, too big for this bay to handle it. It was a bit unruly too, still too stirred up despite the light offshore.
